Trend of the recent herbal medicine research on anti-obesity

Abstract
Objects : This study was designed to suggest research direction for development of alternative herbal anti-obesity drug through analysis of trend in obesity studies with herbal medicine.

Methods : We searched papers on ¡®www.pubmed.com¡¯ , and then filtered using keywords, obesity and (herbal, oriental medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Korean medicine, medicinal plant), in articles reported for recent 5 years between 2009 and Sep. 2013.

Results : Total article found in the web site were 73 and they were analysed by system of study as in vivo(68%), in vitro(18%), in vivo and in vitro(14%). Used as a material in vivo system, by mouse(41%), rat(33%), human(22%), hamster(2%) and rabbit(2%). The used effective plants classified by medicinal plant(37%) and oriental herbal medicine(63). Entered channels and properties were dominant spleen & lung, sweet & warm in antiobesity-related oriental medicine respectively. In addition to these plants belonged in herbal to tonifying, clear hearts, releas the exterior, mainly.
Conclusion : These result suggest availability of herbal medicine as a candidate materials of anti-obesity drug according to oriental therapeutic principles
